If you find yourself in Zurich with a craving for those “Sound of Music” panoramic views but only have one day to spare, look no further than Rigi Kulm. Known as the “Queen of the Mountains,” Rigi offers 360-degree views of the Alps and 13 different lakes.
The best part? The journey there is just as spectacular as the summit itself. This specific loop involves trains, a majestic lake ferry, a historic cogwheel train, and a scenic cable car.
Grab your camera and some comfortable walking shoes—we’re catching the 8:00 AM train.
08:00 AM | The Journey Begins: Zurich to Lucerne
Start your morning at Zürich Hauptbahnhof (HB). The 8:00 AM InterRegio or EuroCity train to Lucerne is a smooth, 45-to-50-minute ride.
- Pro Tip: Sit on the left side of the train for the best views of Lake Zug as you approach the mountains.
- The Vibe: Watch the urban landscape melt into rolling green hills and pristine Swiss farmhouses.
09:00 AM | Lucerne: The Gateway to the Alps
Once you arrive at Lucerne station, don’t linger too long—the ferry terminal is directly across the street. However, you’ll have just enough time to snap a photo of the Kappelbrücke (Chapel Bridge), the world’s oldest covered wooden bridge, which is visible from the pier.
09:12 AM | Setting Sail: Lucerne to Vitznau via Ferry

Board the large white lake steamer (or motor vessel) headed for Vitznau. This 1-hour boat ride is arguably the most relaxing part of the day.
- The Sightseeing: You’ll pass Bürgenstock (where Audrey Hepburn got married) and the dramatic cliffs of the lake’s “arms.”
- Must Do: Head to the top deck. The wind in your hair and the deep turquoise water of Lake Lucerne are the perfect morning wake-up call.
10:15 AM | The Ascent: Vitznau to Rigi Kulm

Disembark at Vitznau and walk about 50 steps to the Rigi Bahn. You are about to ride Europe’s first-ever mountain railway (opened in 1871!).
- The Experience: The bright red cogwheel train begins a steep climb. As you ascend, the lake below shrinks and the snow-capped peaks of the Bernese Oberland start to peek over the horizon.
- The Views: Keep your eyes peeled for Swiss cows with giant bells grazing on slopes that look impossibly steep.
11:30 AM | Standing on Top of the World: Rigi Kulm

You’ve reached the summit (1,797m). This is the “Queen” in all her glory.
- What to do: Take the short, paved walk up to the very highest point marked by the antenna. From here, you can see as far as Germany’s Black Forest on a clear day.
- Dining Recommendation: For a lunch with a view, stop at Rigi Kulm-Hotel. If the weather is nice, grab a Bratwurst and some Alpermagronen (Swiss Alpine macaroni with cheese and onions) from the self-service terrace.
02:00 PM | The Descent: Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad-First
Hop back on the red cogwheel train for a short, 15-minute ride down to Rigi Kaltbad-First.
- The Walk: It’s a literal 2-minute stroll from the train station to the center of Rigi Kaltbad.
- Must Visit: The Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad, designed by famous architect Mario Botta. Even if you don’t go for a soak, the stone and glass architecture is a sight to behold.
03:00 PM | Floating Down: The Weggis Cableway (LWRK)

Now for a change of pace. Board the Weggis–Rigi Kaltbad aerial cableway.
- The Thrill: This large gondola “drops” off the side of the mountain, offering a bird’s-eye view of the lake that feels like you’re flying. It’s a 10-minute descent of pure adrenaline and beauty.
03:15 PM | The Scenic Stroll to Weggis
Once you hit the bottom station, follow the “See” (Lake) signs for a 15-20 minute walk down into the village of Weggis.
- The Sightseeing: Weggis is often called the “Riviera of Central Switzerland.” It’s filled with palm trees, manicured gardens, and grand old hotels. Mark Twain once called it the loveliest place he’d ever stayed!
04:05 PM | The Final Cruise: Weggis to Lucerne

Catch the ferry back to Lucerne. This is the perfect time for a “Sundowner” drink on the boat. Watch the sunset glow hit the “Seven Peaks” as you glide back toward the city.
05:30 PM | Lucerne to Zurich
Back in Lucerne, catch the frequent train back to Zurich. You’ll likely be tired, but your camera roll will be full of the most iconic landscapes Switzerland has to offer.
Travel Quick Tips
- The Swiss Travel Pass: If you have one, this entire journey (trains, boats, cogwheels, and cable cars) is 100% covered. No extra tickets needed!
- Weather Check: Always check the Rigi Webcam before you leave Zurich. Sometimes it’s cloudy in the city but sunny above the “sea of fog” on the mountain.
- Footwear: While the paths are well-maintained, wear sneakers with good grip.
