Stoos: A Swiss Mountain Escape

High above Lake Lucerne, nestled in the heart of central Switzerland, lies the car-free mountain village of Stoos. Known primarily for being home to the world’s steepest funicular, this alpine paradise offers a perfect mix of high-adrenaline “edge of the world” views and tranquil mountain charm.

Whether you are a seasoned hiker or just looking for a cozy spot to enjoy a fondue with a view, Stoos is a quintessential Swiss experience.

đźš‚ Getting There: Zurich to Stoos

The journey from Zurich takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and is seamless thanks to the precision of the Swiss Travel System.

  1. Zurich HB to Schwyz: Take the direct InterRegio (IR) train from Zurich Main Station towards Arth-Goldau/Locarno. Disembark at Schwyz.
  2. Schwyz to the Base Station: From Schwyz station, hop on Bus 501 (direction Muotathal, Hölloch).
  3. The Final Ascent: Get off at the stop “Schwyz, Stoosbahn.” This is where you’ll find the valley station for the record-breaking funicular.

đźš  The World Record Funicular

The Stoosbahn isn’t just a transport method; it’s an engineering marvel. Opened in 2017, it replaced an older line and set a world record for the steepest gradient on a funicular railway.

  • The Gradient: A staggering 110% (47.7°) at its steepest point.
  • The Design: The cabins are barrel-shaped and rotate as the slope changes. This means while the train is climbing a near-vertical cliff, you remain standing on a perfectly level floor.
  • Timing: The funicular runs every 30 minutes (xx:10 and xx:40) and takes about 4 to 7 minutes to reach the village.
  • 2026 Maintenance Breaks: Be aware that the funicular typically closes for maintenance in early spring (April) and late autumn (November). Always check the live timetable before you go.

đź’° Ticket Prices (2025/2026 Estimates)

  • Return Trip (Funicular only): ~CHF 24.
  • Stoos Day Pass (Peak Experience): ~CHF 56-58. This includes the funicular plus the chairlifts to Klingenstock and Fronalpstock—highly recommended for hikers.
  • Discounts: If you have a Swiss Travel Pass or GA, the funicular ride to the village is 100% free. You only pay for the chairlifts (usually at a 50% discount). Half-Fare cardholders get 50% off all tickets.

🏔️ Top Activities at Stoos

1. The Stoos Ridge Hike (Summer/Autumn)

This is the “crown jewel” of Central Swiss hiking. It connects the peaks of Klingenstock and Fronalpstock.

  • The Route: Take the chairlift from the village to Klingenstock, hike along the narrow (but safe) ridge to Fronalpstock, and then take the chairlift back down.
  • The View: On a clear day, you can see 10 different Swiss lakes and countless peaks like Rigi and Pilatus.
  • Duration: Approximately 2–2.5 hours of actual walking.

2. Fronalpstock Viewpoint

If you aren’t in the mood for a hike, take the chairlift directly to the summit of Fronalpstock. It features a spectacular viewing platform overlooking the “fjord-like” Urnersee (the southern arm of Lake Lucerne). There is also a restaurant and a petting zoo with pygmy goats for the kids.

3. Winter Sports

In the winter, Stoos transforms into a boutique ski resort.

  • Sledging: There are dedicated runs for airboarding and traditional sledging.
  • Skiing: 35km of slopes that cater to both beginners (near the village) and experts (from the peaks).

4. The Moor Adventure Trail

A great option for families. It’s a flat, stroller-friendly loop around the village that explains the local ecosystem through interactive play stations.

đź’ˇ Pro-Tip for Photographers

If you want the best “steepness” photo of the funicular, try to stand in the very bottom cabin during the ascent or the very top cabin during the descent. The view looking down the track into the tunnel is dizzying!
